Yes thats correct Ataribox, as in Atari the old school console/games manufacture. They are coming back with a offering of their own that will play both "classic" and "current" games content. Now I have had a look and there is not too much info on show over specs so far the only technical things mentioned are the ports, HDMI, 4xUSB, SD. It has however been said elsewhere that it will be powered off PC hardware. Some are guessing it will be something along the lines of a "Steam Machine"Â (Valve's some what forgotten console PC hybrid thing that never quite took off), but with a custom UI.
"Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari." |
""As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content." |
Others are worried they will stray even farther away from the traditional gaming market and go with an Android based OS, with some already writing it off as an "Atari Ouya", which is a bit harsh in my opinion considering we know next to nothing and it has already been stated the box will feature PC hardware. Inspired by classic Atari design elements the console/PC/box whatever you want to call it will feature the iconic wood finish while also being available in a black/red edition. I am quite interested in this whole undertaking, although its more from a professional view point than personal, having played the Atari but never owned it, it holds no power of nostalgia over me and I couldn't even tell you one retro game I would want to see stretched over my big screen. "We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, features, pricing, timing etc. We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring Ataribox to life, and to listen closely to Atari community feedback as we do so. There are a lot of milestones, challenges and decision points in front of us in the months ahead. We’ll be giving you lots more information and status updates as we progress, and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride!" |
