There’s never been a better time to go to Hell.
Another game another free trial, this time from Bethesda's and Id's ultra violent DOOM series. Starting today for XBox One and PC users (PS4 Next week) last years hit FPS, with an award winning single player campaign, DOOM will be free to play until the late hours of Sunday night, or early hours of Monday morning depending on your platform. This free weekend comes riding along with ominously named "Update 6.66" that brings with it not just a free trial but even more goodies, Doom's multiplayer DLC is now free for all players new and existing.
It’s been just over a year since we released DOOM and it’s thrilling to see not only many of our earliest players still enjoying the game, but also new Slayers joining the fight every day. Whether you’ve been playing for a year, a week or even if you still haven’t Glory Killed your first demon, we’ve got some exciting news for you. This week we’re rolling out the “ultimate” DOOM experience and offering it to new players at a hellishly low price |
During the free trial, players can delve into DOOM’s award winning campaign with the first two levels coming free as part of the trial. Not only that, but players can also sample Doom's multiplayer complete with all the DLC. Any progress made during this weekend’s trial will transfer over to the full game, if you so choose to purchase it, and why wouldn’t you? As the generosity doesn’t stop there as DOOM will also be on sale for a very reasonable £11.99/~€13-15
Another big change coming to the game's multiplayer is the introduction of Runes replacing the phased out Hack Modules; similar to the ones from the campaign they will be equitable items that will be “a consistent and predictable component of your loadout and play style”. Enhanced kill notifications are also part of a revamp to the multiplayer UI as well as revised post-match summaries.
Lots of fans are hopeful that the combination of the free weekend, the sale, and the host of changes will bring some much needed bodies to the multiplayer, as it was one of the major criticisms of the game. I’m sure there will be a few unhappy campers who have already bought all the DLC or the “season pass” who might be a wee bit sour to see the content they paid for go for free. Those who have less interest in multiplayer may be disappointed in the lack of a single player expansion but in an interview with Polygon, the game’s director indicated the team had “a lot of stuff on the table” with regards to campaign DLC.
