That’s right, you read that correctly! A new Ages of Empires game, more than a decade since the third instalment - 12 years to be more precise, and who better to narrate about the passing of time and the rise and fall of empires than Charles Dance a.k.a. Tywin Lannister. Now, this may sound a bit sensationalized, but hear me out; this is a huge announcement, close to as big as they can get when it comes to gaming announcements.
In just 4 short years, only counting Steam users, the HD version of AoEII has sold 4.5 million copies, making it one of the 20 best selling PC games of all time. This is not counting the original that has been out since 1999, this is only the remastered version. Those are some pretty large numbers, and regardless of whether you like the games or not you can see how this announcement is a pretty big deal, especially after 12 years without a sequel. I just really hope the game lives up to the undoubted wave of hype and expectation that will come its way, as this is not just an iconic games reputation on the line but AoE is the foundation of many people’s childhood gaming interest, and if it flops the backlash will be pretty hard to play down.
The only down side, or notable negative thing is that it is a Windows 10 exclusive, meaning the millions of users still holding firm in their windows 7 strongholds will either have to upgrade or go without, which will be their loss.
Back to good news again and Microsoft/Windows have announced that both AoE II and III will be be re-released again this time as the suitably named "Definitive Editions" all remastered in glorious 4k. Â
